TIP: Add 10% waste for straight lay, 15% for diagonal patterns, 20% for complex layouts or large-format tiles. Buy all tiles from one lot to ensure color consistency.

SHOWER TIP: Use waterproof membrane behind tiles. Subway tile (3×6) is most popular for showers. Use 1/16" or 1/8" grout joints for wall tiles. Larger tiles = fewer joints = less maintenance.

Grout Calculator

Calculate how much grout you need based on tile and joint size.

Grout Estimate

GROUT GUIDE: Sanded grout for joints 1/8"–5/8". Unsanded for joints under 1/8" (walls, glass tiles). Epoxy grout for high-moisture areas (showers, pools) — stain-proof but harder to apply.

Tile Installation Cost Calculator

Estimate total tile project costs including materials, labor and supplies.

SAVE MONEY: Ceramic is cheapest. Buy during sales (Memorial Day, Black Friday). Large format tiles cost more to install but fewer grout lines = less maintenance. DIY saves 50-70% on labor.

How to Calculate Tiles Needed

Our tile calculator determines the exact number of tiles for any project. For floor tiles: measure room length × width in feet to get square footage. Divide by tile area (e.g., 12×12" tile = 1 sqft). Add 10-15% for waste. For a 12×10ft room with 12×12" tiles: 120 sqft ÷ 1 = 120 tiles + 12 waste = 132 tiles.

Shower Tile Calculator

For shower tiles, calculate each wall separately: wall height × wall width. A standard 3×5ft shower with 8ft ceiling: back wall (5×8=40) + two side walls (3×8×2=48) = 88 sqft. Add shower floor if tiling. Subtract the showerhead wall window if applicable. Use 15% waste for wall tiles.

How to Calculate Square Footage for Tile

Convert tile dimensions from inches to feet (divide by 12). For 12×24" tile: (12÷12) × (24÷12) = 1 × 2 = 2 sqft per tile. For 3×6" subway tile: 0.25 × 0.5 = 0.125 sqft per tile (8 tiles per sqft). Our tile square footage calculator handles all conversions automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need for my floor?+
Multiply room length × width (in feet) for total sqft. Divide by tile area (in sqft). A 12×12" tile = 1 sqft, 12×24" = 2 sqft, 6×6" = 0.25 sqft. Add 10% waste for straight layout, 15% for diagonal.
How much does tile installation cost?+
Floor tile: $5-$12/sqft installed. Wall tile: $7-$20/sqft. Shower: $8-$25/sqft. Materials add $1-$15/sqft depending on tile type. A 100 sqft bathroom floor: $600-$1,700 total.
How much grout do I need?+
Depends on tile size and joint width. Smaller tiles need more grout. 12×12" with 1/8" joints: ~1 lb per 12 sqft. 3×6" subway with 1/16" joints: ~1 lb per 8 sqft. Our grout calculator handles this precisely.
What size tile is best for a small bathroom?+
12×24" tiles make small bathrooms look larger (fewer grout lines). Light colors also help. Avoid very small mosaic tiles on floors (too many grout lines = harder to clean). Use small tiles on shower floors only for drainage.
