Steel Weight Calculator Guide

Our steel weight calculator computes the weight of standard structural profiles (IPE, HEA, HEB, UPN, angles, tubes) and custom sections. Select from carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and more materials with precise densities.

How to Calculate Steel Weight

The formula: Weight = Volume × Density. For profiles, use the standard kg/m value from tables multiplied by length. For plates: L(m) × W(m) × T(m) × density. Carbon steel density is 7,850 kg/m³. For quick estimates: 1m² of 1mm thick steel ≈ 7.85 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does steel weigh per meter?+
It depends on the profile. IPE 200: 22.4 kg/m. HEA 200: 42.3 kg/m. HEB 200: 61.3 kg/m. A 10mm plate (1m wide): 78.5 kg/m. Round bar Ø20mm: 2.47 kg/m. Always check the specific profile table for exact values.
Stainless steel vs carbon steel weight?+
Stainless 304 (8,000 kg/m³) is about 2% heavier than carbon steel (7,850 kg/m³). Stainless 316 (8,027 kg/m³) is 2.3% heavier. For most calculations, the difference is small but matters for large structures and shipping weight estimates.
