How to Calculate Deck Boards
Our deck board calculator helps you determine exactly how many boards you need. The formula is: divide the total deck area by the coverage of one board (board width × board length), then add waste. For a 20×16ft deck using 5.5" × 12ft boards: the deck is 320 sqft, each board covers 5.5 sqft, so you need ~58 boards + 10% waste = 64 boards.
How to Calculate Stairs for a Deck
To calculate deck stairs: divide total rise (deck height) by ideal riser height (7-7.75"). For a 48" high deck: 48 ÷ 7.5 = 6.4, round to 7 risers and 6 treads. Actual rise = 48 ÷ 7 = 6.86" per step. Total run = 6 treads × 11" = 66" (5.5 ft). Use our deck stair calculator for precise measurements.
Deck Railing Spindle Spacing
Building code requires max 4-inch gaps between balusters. For a 6ft railing section with 1.5" balusters: 72" ÷ (1.5 + 3.5) = 14.4, so you need 13-14 balusters per section. Our deck railing calculator handles all the math automatically.
Deck Cost Estimator
Average deck building costs: Pressure-treated wood $15-$25/sqft installed, cedar $22-$35/sqft, composite $25-$45/sqft, PVC $30-$50/sqft, hardwood $35-$75/sqft. A 320 sqft deck typically costs $6,400-$16,000 depending on material choice.
